Art and Design

Art and Design is such a wonderful and powerful subject area at Stathern, as it allows all children to be creative and explore their individual expression as well as fully exploiting our school ethos: ‘Nurture, Inspire, Discover, Create’. Children foster such a positive attitude towards this area of the curriculum and thoroughly enjoy their lessons where they are encouraged to behave like an artist!

So what does ‘Art and Design’ look like across the Stathern Primary School? In Class 1, Art is taught predominantly through the Expressive Arts and Design strand of the EYFS curriculum as well as linking with Physical Development where children develop their physical control using tools and equipment. Throughout the rest of the school, children are taught Art and Design through 3 key areas:  generating ideas, making and evaluating where they undertake projects or pathways rather than one off art activities. Each project will be tailored towards children developing skills in a range of media including, drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, architecture, printmaking and digital media. During each ‘pathway’, children are also exposed to key artists linked to that media to consider responses to their pieces, techniques used and inspiration. The curriculum has been carefully planned and designed so that knowledge and skills are progressively taught so that year on year, children are able to build and broaden their capability.

We are currently in the process of organising an art week at the end of next half term where we will be celebrating ‘the Best of British’ and we look forward to sharing this wonderful event with you.
